Nonetheless, the robotic aliases of Thomas Bangelter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo have forever claimed their place in the halls of disco. Five years on, their retirement comes as a surprise to say the least. Their final project Random Access Memories came out in 2013, and in the years since then, they were only found working on features - most notably, The Weeknd's hit 2016 singles Starboy and I Feel It Coming. Why did Daft Punk break up? Well, that's a question which remains unanswered. ' If love is the answer, you're home' harmonize the vocoded robots, and in that moment, they're nothing but human. That is, up until the end, when the final reprise from Touch fades in to the sight of the setting sun, along with an overlay which reads '1993-2021'.įeaturing vocals from Paul Williams, with a medley of orchestral strings and futuristic leads in the background, Touch feels like a fitting note for Daft Punk to close on. It almost feels like an album announcement, apart from the distinct lack of background music. Wearing embroidered jackets and their iconic helmets from the Human After All era, the pair are seen walking through a desert expanse.

On February 22, they announced their retirement through a video titled 'Epilogue', which features a snippet from their 2006 movie Daft Punk's Electroma. 8.It's a bittersweet end to an illustrious career as French duo Daft Punk break up without so much as an encore. Although it feels lacking in certain parts, Starboy is definitely a highly enjoyable song, mixing both Daft Punk and The Weeknd in one package. The song needs multiple listening to really grow on you, I was disappointed the first time, but as I listen to it every day, this song continues to make its way to my favorites. The whole song gives an outrun kinda feel, making you feel like a badass and putting you in the mood for a drive in the middle of the night. The instrumental and the odd lyrics flows very smoothly together. These weird lyrics could also be explained by how The Weeknd allegedly only wrote the lyrics for 20 minutes after meeting Daft Punk in their studio, as he mentioned in an interview with Wall Street Journal. This song is basically Abel realizing his rising stardom, although it’s a bit hard to tell if it’s just a sarcastic view of his fame, or if he’s actually bragging about it, perhaps both?
“You” could be referring to his fans who made him famous or maybe his former self that made the current self a “Starboy”. Unto the meaning of the lyrics itself, it seems that this is Tesfaye telling us how he has transformed from the old coconut hair Abel into the serious and dark Abel. Maybe it’s the combination of the modified vocal and the unorthodox wording of the lyric that gave that impression. The lyrics are a bit puzzling at first, some would not even understand the lyric at all without searching it up on Google. While simplicity is Daft Punk’s thing, I still felt like the instrumental could’ve been way better if they want it to be. It’s what Daft Punk do best, looping instrumentals to create the best combination. We can also hear the trademark Daft Punk Vocoder in the chorus, which I suspect the voice behind it to be one of the robots.Īlthough the overall instrumental is very catchy, I feel like they could’ve done more with it. it’s subtle yet at the same time very prominent throughout the song, hitting the note just at the right time with the drum beat. The piano is the thread that connects Starboy to Random Access Memories. The drum loop is arguably the pillar to this whole song, it’s simple yet at the same time stupidly catchy to the point of wanting to shake your head like what Abel did on the music video. If one were to hear closely, though, they would hear a distinct style used in Random Access Memories.
Starboy offers a uniquely different style than what fans are used to hearing on their discography.
I first heard about the rumor collaboration with The Weeknd on the /r/DaftPunk subreddit and I was one of the people who was very skeptical on the legitimacy of the rumor, but here we are. Their music always manages to take me to another dimension every time I give it a listen. I’m a big fan of Daft Punk ever since I saw the movie Interstella 5555. Knowing that I had great expectations for this track, but also great worry as well. Collaborating for the first time with my all time favorite musicians Daft Punk. ‘Starboy’ is the title of The Weeknd’s new single from his upcoming album.
